Kargi

About Kargi

Who makes it, why, and how what it teaches is checked.

Who makes it

Kargi is made by Max Greenall, a software engineer based between Oxford and Tbilisi, who wanted to learn Georgian properly: to read the signs, order at the market and talk to the neighbours.

It’s a small, independent project, made by someone learning Georgian too, and shaped by the people who use it.

Why

There was no good way to learn Georgian on a phone. The big apps don’t teach it, and phrasebooks skip the alphabet, so everything stays a string of Latin letters you can’t match to what you see in the street.

Kargi starts with the 33 letters, then teaches the words and phrases for life here: cafés, taxis, shops, the doctor, renting a flat. A few minutes a day.

Who checks it

Every word, phrase and recording is being checked by native Georgian speakers. Until a recording is checked, the voices are generated and marked as such in the app.

Speakers who help are named here once they’ve agreed to be.
