Learning Georgian

Does Duolingo have Georgian?

The short answer, then what learning Georgian really takes and the ways to go about it.

No, not yet.

As of October 2026, Duolingo doesn’t have a Georgian course, for English speakers or for Russian speakers. Learners have petitioned for one, but there’s no sign of it coming.

What learning Georgian takes

Its own alphabet, first

Georgian is written in Mkhedruli: 33 letters of its own. Learn them first and every word after is something you can read, not a string of Latin letters to memorise. Kargi starts there, in six small groups.

Sounds English doesn’t have

The ejectives, said with a short catch in the throat, and a few sounds made far back in the mouth. You need to hear them often: every letter and word in Kargi can be played, and slowed down.

Words for real life

The café, taxis, shopping, the doctor, renting a flat: 15 topics for life in Georgia, each ending with a real conversation.

A little, every day

Short lessons, words that come back just before you’d forget them, a streak to keep, and friends to learn alongside.

Ways to learn it

An app for every day. Kargi is made for Georgian alone: the alphabet, then the words and phrases for life here. It works in your browser, in English or Russian, and it’s free during the beta.

A teacher, for speaking. Nothing replaces talking to a person: a tutor online or a class in Tbilisi, with a little practice every day, is the quickest way to conversation.

And the city itself. Once you can read the alphabet, every sign, menu and metro station is practice.
