გამარჯობა, “hello”, comes from გამარჯვება, “victory”: it wishes you well, and the answer გაგიმარჯოს wishes it back.
Two ways to say “you”
Georgian has a casual “you” for friends and children, შენ, and a polite one, თქვენ, for strangers, older people and more than one person. Greetings follow suit: როგორ ხარ? is casual, როგორ ბრძანდებით? is polite.
Three kinds of yes
დიახ is the polite yes, for shops, officials and anyone older. კი is the everyday yes, and ჰო is as casual as “yeah”.
