Colours in Georgian

Georgia’s best-known red grape, საფერავი (Saperavi), takes its name from ფერი, colour: unusually, its juice is red too, and it gives the wine its deep colour.

“-coloured”

Many colours are a thing plus ფერი, colour: ცისფერი is sky-coloured (light blue), ვარდისფერი rose-coloured (pink), ყავისფერი coffee-coloured (brown), ნაცრისფერი ash-coloured (grey).

Two blues

Like Russian, Georgian has two blues: ლურჯი is blue, ცისფერი a light, sky blue.

Light and dark

Put ღია, light, or მუქი, dark, before a colour: ღია მწვანე, light green; მუქი წითელი, dark red.
