Good to know

Georgia has made wine for around 8,000 years, often in qvevri, large clay jars buried in the ground: a method on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. Most of it comes from Kakheti, in the east.

Counting things

After a number the noun stays singular: ორი ჭიქა is “two glass”, not “two glasses”. ხუთი ლარი is “five lari”.

How a supra works

At a supra the თამადა, the toastmaster, proposes toasts in turn: to Georgia, to parents, to friends, to those no longer here. Raise your glass and say გაუმარჯოს! to join in.
