Learning Georgian

How do you type in Georgian on a phone or computer?

The short answer

Add the Georgian keyboard in your device’s settings: it’s built into iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. Most Georgians use the QWERTY-based layout, where each letter sits on the Latin key that sounds like it: ა on A, ბ on B, გ on G.

iPhone and iPad

Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Georgian. Switch to it with the globe key.

Android

In Gboard: Settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Georgian. Hold or swipe the space bar to switch.

Windows and Mac

Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Georgian. Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit → + → Georgian (choose Georgian QWERTY).

The keys that aren’t obvious

Pairs of similar sounds share a key, the second with Shift: T is ტ and Shift+T is თ, W is წ and Shift+W is ჭ, R is რ and Shift+R is ღ, S is ს and Shift+S is შ, Z is ზ and Shift+Z is ძ, J is ჯ and Shift+J is ჟ, C is ც and Shift+C is ჩ. Q is ქ, Y is ყ, X is ხ and H is ჰ. No Georgian keyboard to hand? Type it in Latin letters in the transliteration tool and copy the Georgian.
